Interest in exclusive whisky continues to grow worldwide. While luxury was once primarily associated with watches, classic cars and real estate, a clear shift is emerging towards tangible collectibles with a story to tell. Rare and aged whiskies, in particular, are becoming increasingly sought after by collectors, entrepreneurs and high net worth individuals.
According to Wealthy Whisky Society (WWS) founders Rick de Kroon and Roy Martin, this trend is largely driven by scarcity. A whisky distilled decades ago can never be reproduced. Once a cask has been emptied, that specific whisky is gone forever.
“At a time when almost everything can be reproduced, appreciation is growing for products that are inherently finite.”
Alongside scarcity, the perception of luxury itself is changing. Ownership is no longer the ultimate goal. Instead, the experience surrounding an exceptional bottle has become equally valuable. Travelling to Scottish distilleries, attending private tastings and meeting master blenders have become an integral part of whisky culture. As a result, whisky aligns with a broader shift towards exclusive communities and meaningful experiences, where authenticity and craftsmanship matter more than traditional status symbols.
A platform built around craftsmanship and experience
Inspired by this evolution, Rick de Kroon and Roy Martin founded Wealthy Whisky Society. What began more than a decade ago as a personal fascination with exceptional whisky has evolved into a platform where enthusiasts, collectors and entrepreneurs come together through exclusive bottlings, international whisky journeys and unique encounters. Members gain access to carefully curated whiskies that are generally unavailable through traditional retail channels. In addition, the platform organises private tastings, visits to renowned Scottish distilleries, culinary experiences and exclusive meetings with producers.
According to the founders, collecting bottles is only part of the story. “People don’t buy an exceptional whisky solely for what’s inside the bottle. They buy it for the story, the heritage and the people behind it,” says Roy Martin.
Entrepreneurship as a starting point
Interestingly, Wealthy Whisky Society did not originate within the whisky industry, but through entrepreneurship. Rick de Kroon began his career in law enforcement before joining forces with Roy Martin to build several companies in the security sector. It was a world defined by responsibility, rapid decision-making and constant pressure. Within that environment, they discovered a growing appreciation for something entirely different: a world built on patience, craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Around 2013, Rick started collecting rare whisky as a personal investment. As his collection expanded, so did the interest from people within his professional network. Fellow entrepreneurs sought advice, wanted to acquire exceptional bottles or were simply curious about the market behind them. What began as a private collection gradually evolved into Wealthy Whisky Society. Yet Rick and Roy do not see the platform as a traditional whisky merchant.
“Our ambition is to build a community where craftsmanship, heritage and meaningful encounters come together. Whisky is simply the starting point, not the end goal,” says Rick de Kroon.
Wealthy Whisky Society (WWS) is an exclusive platform that provides enthusiasts, collectors and entrepreneurs with access to the world of ultra premium whisky. The platform specialises in rare and limited edition bottlings that are generally unavailable through traditional retail channels. In addition, members gain access to private tastings, international whisky journeys, exclusive visits to renowned Scottish distilleries and carefully curated events. Founded by Rick de Kroon and Roy Martin, Wealthy Whisky Society brings together a community where craftsmanship, heritage and personal connections are at the heart of every experience. Beyond offering access to exceptional whiskies, the platform enables members to deepen their knowledge, meet the people behind iconic distilleries and discover the stories that define some of the world’s most remarkable spirits, and why an increasing number of collectors now consider it one of the most rewarding luxury pursuits of all.
